Bill Clewett, Accountant and MKDC Finance & Administration Director 1987 to 1992
Bill’s great-great grandfather had worked at Wolverton Railway Works, his father leaving to sign up for the WW II. Bill was born in Old Stratford and they then moved to Stony Stratford, where his mother (born in Canada) took over Bill’s grandmother’s draper’s shop. Bill attended the secondary technical college at Wolverton for three years, and went into the Works offices finance department in 1957. he worked there for 10 years, qualifying as an accountant by part-time study. He recalls meeting his wife at school and recalls the ‘bunny walk’ in Stony Stratford in his younger days – watching the girls walking up and down the High Street on Sunday afternoons! Bill recalls hearing about the designation of the new city but it was difficult to visualise. Having qualified, he began to wonder about job opportunities in finance and in 1967 took a job with the Commission for the New Towns at Hemel Hempstead, thinking that this might help if there were jobs going in Milton Keynes. In 1970 he applied and was interviewed for a Finance Dept. post at MKDC. He was appointed to do financial appraisals.
