Marsaili Cameron identifies as a lesbian and was born in Inverness, Scotland, in 1951. Sonja Ruehl identifies as a lesbian and was born in Birmingham in 1950. They are lesbian partners who moved to Milton Keynes in the mid-1970s and became active members of the local LGBTQ+ community. In this joint oral history interview they reflect on their early lives, how they met through work at the Open University, and the supportive but evolving environment for gay people at the time. The interview recounts their activism through the Campaign for Homosexual Equality (CHE), their roles in setting up befriending services for isolated individuals, and their involvement in early women’s studies education. Marsaili and Sonja describe the social challenges of being gay in a rural and politically conservative area, including experiences of discrimination and the lack of legal protections for same-sex couples. They highlight the significance of inclusive social spaces like The Cannon disco and reflect on the lasting impact of community-building, personal relationships, and academic contributions to gender and sexuality discourse. Their stories underline the personal and political struggles and milestones that shaped their lives and contributed to broader LGBTQ+ progress.
