Digital Storytelling...
There is an exciting development that started in the USA and is slowly gaining practitioners in the UK. It's called Digital Storytelling and it's giving people the chance to share their stories, their views and feelings with others through multimedia enhanced oral histories that are shared over the World Wide Web.

Digital stories are short (2-3 minute) videos that comprise a story, with an accompanying musical sound track, illustrated by photos and/or clips of video or film, etc.

An organisation might use these stories in a range of ways:

- to show the range of personalities of those who work for them, explaining the motives and values they bring to their work

- to tell stories about the organisation’s history and development thorough an employee’s eyes

- to reflect on the organisation’s values and how they are reflected in those who work for it, to encourage employees to envision a new future

Such a product might be used as a marketing tool, because it can be easily compressed to be made accessible on a website, or sent via email, as well as being able to be played ‘large screen’ in public presentations.

The process of producing such stories can be a great training and team-building opportunity, with participants also learning new creative ICT skills.

First Option: Digital Story Workshop
Living Archive will work with four people from the organisation to enable them to write, edit and produce their own 2-3 minute digital stories.

This will comprise:

- Half day introduction session. What is a digital story? See examples and discuss what your story might be and how you might illustrate it. You will then source the images and write a 250 word script and produce a simple storyboard that you can then send to Living Archive for comments and suggestions prior to the Creation workshop.

- Full day Creation Workshop when, with guidance, you will record your soundtrack, scan your photos, edit video clips , work with a composer to devise music soundtrack and compile the story using digital video editing software.

Living Archive will provide all portable equipment that can be brought to your training room or you may choose to work off site at Living Archive’s training room in Wolverton. Completed stories will be produced as a compilation in DVD format (10 copies) and in a format suitable for distribution on the web ( e.g .mpg, .wmv, mov, or Flash )

Second Option: Commissioned Digital Story
Living Archive will work with four people from the organisation to produce the 2-3 minute digital stories that they have written.

This will comprise:

- Half day introduction session. What is a digital story? See examples and discuss what your story might be and how you might illustrate it. You will then source the images and write a 250 word script and produce a simple storyboard that you can then send to Living Archive for comments and suggestions prior to the Production Workshop

- Production workshop You will put your story together in a one-to-one session with a Living Archive film-maker with you acting as Director, but not having to worry about the technical bits. You will also work with a musician to commission an original soundtrack.

Third Option: Information Stories for the Web
Living Archive will work with four people from the organisation to each make a 2-3 minute information film about an issue that the organisation wants to publicise in multimedia form. The aim of the course is to equip participants with the skills and confidence to produce short films including script writing and storyboard creation, speaking to camera and simple video recording, digital video editing and post production for DVD or web outputs.

This will comprise:

- Half day introduction session What are the component parts of an information story? What is your story and how might you illustrate it? Creating a simple storyboard.

- Full day video workshop. You will record your story to camera and source additional video footage for cutaways, learning simple foolproof camera techniques. You will also scan and size still images

- Full day editing workshop. You will digitally edit your final film and learn how to export it into different formats for distribution.

Living Archive will provide all portable equipment that can be brought to your training room or you may choose to work off site at Living Archive’s training room in Wolverton. Completed stories will be produced as a compilation in DVD format (10 copies) and in a format suitable for distribution on the web (e.g .mpg, .wmv, .mov, or Flash)
