Apprentice attempt at sign writing, c 1924

Object No.53
Object No.53

This ‘test piece’ of sign writing was produced by Frank Brown when he was an apprentice Finisher in the Finishing Shop at Wolverton Works. It is not known whether he produced it at work, or at a night school class at Wolverton Science and Arts Institute, because an aptitude in sign-writing was not strictly part of a Finisher’s trade.

Wolverton Works used to have many fine sign writers in the days before stick-on transfers and the quality of their work can be seen in the reconstructed Works Board Room at Milton Keynes Museum .
