Cathy Higgins recalls moving to Milton Keynes in 2003 to a newly built estate. Commuted to Luton but now works in Milton Keynes, previously moved around with her husband’s job in the newspaper industry. Talks about always wanting to be a teacher and her own schooldays. Her family is from Scotland always supports Scotland at sporting events. Describes New Year or Hogmany traditions, first footing, drinking whisky and black barm cake and the baby’s potty filled with salt given to a bride. Explains the importance of her Scottish history and her Italian family through her grandmother. Recalls Christening Pieces, a gift of biscuits sandwiched with butter and with coins in given to a baby and a ‘Scam’le’ which is when a newly married couple throw small denomination coins to children. Talks about all things Scottish tenement houses, Scottish dances, kilts, clans, Edinburgh, sporrans, skean dhus, bagpipes, raspberries, ceilidhs, clootie dumplings and her family name.
