He was my Grandad too. I remember the geese one was called Bill. There was an old caravan out the back.Bill would let us kids in but wouldn’t let us out. We had to be rescued. I have photos of one of the bus trips and the interior of the pub. My Mum corresponded with their evacuee for years.
My grandad, Jim Smith, ran this pub when I was growing up in the 1950’s. I remember the outside loo being wallpapered with a large engraving of the Battle of Trafalgar and the death of Lord Nelson. There were 3 angry geese out back, who chased us always. Grandad trained Home Guard in the pub yard in WW2 and organized housing for children evacuees from London. I think he was also involved with the football team and also organizing bus trips.

Are there any pictures of 40 Vicarage Rd? My great grandparents lived there, but it doesn’t seem to be there anymore

It would be great if we could have copies of the photos for the archive.
