Interview with Peter Waterman.
Peter Waterman moved from Hatfield to the Milton Keynes area in 1968, when he was appointed as a planning officer for the Church of England, and secretary of the Bishop of Oxford’s Ecumenical Committee. He discusses his job as vicar, the Milton Keynes Development Corporation (MKDC), local politics and his feelings about the new city. Talking of his early life in MK, he mentions the Woughton canal flooding in December 1971, and the loss of landscape in the 1976 drought.
He discusses liaising with MKDC in his Church role and later his appointment as their Director of Social Development. He held this post for sixteen years and talks of his involvement in areas such as community development, amenities and liaison with County Council services. He also recalls Milton Keynes protest groups, public feeling towards the new town, the sewage works, MKDC’s ‘Master Plan’, and at a later stage the public enquiry into the success of the ‘Master Plan’.
