Interview with Pam Patterson (b.1920s).
Pam Patterson (born in Beverley, Yorkshire), came to Stony Stratford in 1970, when she got a job at the Milton Keynes Development Corporation (MKDC). She recalls being excited about Milton Keynes; it has lived up to her expectations. She describes her first job working with Derek Walker, Chief Architect. She enjoyed working for him, in his suite ‘ lined in orange felt’. She moved on to work in the Information Unit (IU) as soon as it was formed, about 18 months later. Her work there included producing publications, taking people on tours of MK, and dealing with exhibitions; in particular she recalls the six-week exhibition in 1973 at the Design Centre.
She recalls social life at MKDC, and also recalls discrepancies between male and female salaries being improved after union efforts. Initially she thinks MK ‘took a lot of swallowing by the locals’, but in her opinion the city centre is ‘fantastic.’ If she could change anything it would be the cheaper houses – especially the flat roofs.
