Interview with George Selormey (b.1941).
George Selormey was born in Ghana, in a Roman Catholic family, and came to the UK originally to complete his studies in banking. Seeing adverts for Milton Keynes in 1980 he was impressed by the range of housing offered. His employers, the Post Office were beginning a project in Bletchley, so he and his family moved to Neath Hill. They settled in well, making friends through Church and school. After a short period working in Wales and London they decided to buy a housing plot in MK and build a home. He talks of the building project and its problems; they finally moved in 1987.
He and his wife helped to set up the Church in Willen. He talks of other leisure activities; they are still discovering new areas of MK to visit, although they are always busy. He talks of healthcare before the MK Hospital. He loves MK and his move there was worthwhile, but he thinks that there is still room for improvement: there could be more children’s facilities, and it still lacks a ‘centre’, a community. He mentions the Ghanaian Association in MK, of which he is a member. This has made great strides from nothing to a membership of 200.
