Interview with Sue Burrows (b.1948).
Sue Burrows moved to Milton Keynes about 16 years ago, with her husband and children, from Towcester. She had previously commuted to Wolverton to work as a reporter on the Wolverton Express. She now works at Inter-action, the community arts organisation, as project manager and has also worked for the City Discovery Centre. She recalls reporting during the the ‘exciting times’ when the Milton Keynes area had been designated,in particular on consultations with local people. Despite the loss of farmland she praises Milton Keynes Development Corporation’s landscaping: ‘I think it’s terrific’. Discussing changes in Wolverton, in her opinion the Agora has been ‘unanimously hated’ ever since it was built.
She talks of her later move into MK, to a new house in Great Linford: settling in, local shops and the city centre. She comments that transport and parking are still problematic, remembers the early fireworks, Christmas displays and the global festivals in Campbell Park. In her opinion MK is vibrant and lively, though it has become ‘Londonised’ and the city centre is ‘a sacrifice to mammon’. But she says: ‘MK is coming of age … the vision has perhaps been realised to a large extent’.

I had the pleasure of working with Sue at the Wolverton Express in the early 1970s and she was an excellent reporter. Lost touch about 40-odd years ago, so great to see what she’s doing now and adding her voice to the memories of Milton Keynes, which we saw grow from nothing.
