Interview with Nora Bland (b.1928).
Nora Bland moved to Milton Keynes Village in 1981 with her husband, a professor at Cranfield University; due to her multiple sclerosis, they needed to live in a bungalow. Now a widow, Nora is wheelchair-bound, but the house is manageable for her. She discusses the developments in MK Village since 1981: the delay in further building because of methane gas, and the consultation of villagers about the plans. MK village is a strong community, in her opinion.
She talks of disability access and transport to shops, and says: ‘You couldn’t have anywhere better than the centre of Milton Keynes for anything on wheels, be it pushchair or wheelchair and everything in between.’ For healthcare, they always remained with the Newport Pagnell doctor’s practice. She recalls the building of the new hospital; this has been very convenient for her. In terms of other facilities, the shopping centre is marginally less convenient than it was in the early days, but she is very pleased the theatre opened. ‘I feel very well established, I have good friends and excellent neighbours – I am extremely well served with what Milton Keynes has to offer.’
