Interview with David Watson (b.1942).
David Watson and his family moved to Milton Keynes Village in 1980, when he was offered a job as a pharmacist by Boots the Chemist. They had hopes for new possibilities in a new town, although they were concerned about their 11-year old daughter’s education because of the lack of grammar schools; however, she has moved on to higher education.
He talks about their move and choice of house, commenting on some of the early estates and other first impressions. For them, MK Village is a good community; theirs was one of only 30 new houses, and the original residents were ‘really friendly, right from the start’. He talks of the village community centre and activities available for the children in MK. He and his wife enjoy walking and gardening, and use of the Redways. He also talks about shopping in MK and Bletchley, transport and healthcare, remembering the ‘buy a bed’ scheme for the new hospital. He talks of his memories of the opening of the shopping building by Mrs Thatcher and also recalls the visit to the building by the Queen. In his opinion: ‘it [MK] was new, we didn’t know what to expect and we don’t regret any of what we’ve experienced here.’
