Interview with Samantha Bassnett (b.1974).
Sam Bassnett was born in Bletchley. Her parents moved to the Lakes Estate in 1971 to find cheaper housing than London. She remembers enjoying the Lakes Estate adventure playground and Bletchley Leisure Centre. The new shopping centre was ‘so different to Bletchley.’ When she was a teenager, the only entertainment was really the Point and the Winter Gardens, and transport was difficult. She recalls the lack of a hospital; her sister was often in Aylesbury Hospital with asthma.
Sam studied art & design at Bletchley College; after various other work, she is now an airline attendant with Virgin Atlantic. Her significant MK memories include the red balloon advert at the Bowl (she was about 9 years old). Sam ‘made sure she was at the front so she could see herself on TV’; she also recalls the CMK firework displays. MK appeals to her because it is a city with countryside, greenery and modern architecture. And ‘There’s a lot to do in MK; you just need to go out and find it.’ She wouldn’t think of moving away, but transport is ‘a bit of a nightmare’ still.
