Interview with Richard & Kathy Peters.
Richard Peters moved to Milton Keynes from Harlow in 1975 when his job with Legal and General was re-located. He bought a house in MK Village, where he and Kathy still live; they had some initial concerns about its odd design. They talk of choices for shopping at that stage, getting about in the city as the grid roads developed, education for Kathy’s daughter, and health facilities: ‘it was wonderful when the hospital was open.’ They recall plenty of information from Milton Keynes Development Corporation for new arrivals and remember the active social life, mainly involving staff from the Open University and MKDC. They agree there was an excellent community spirit in the village and they settled in well.
Kathy describes her work as a nurse, in schools, family planning clinics and at Stony Stratford doctors’ practice. They discuss the changes they have seen over the years, and improvements that could be made to MK, such as a better transport system. They also talk of local reactions to the new housing being built in MK Village. MK is their home, they are unlikely to move away: ‘we’ve got all the facilities we want and the city centre, the doctors’. They enjoy the convenience of the road system, the redways and the parks for their dog-walking.
