Interview with Andrew Hall (b.1967).
Andrew Hall was born in Stony Stratford and has lived in the Milton Keynes area all his life. He says: ‘Milton Keynes came to me’, he took it for granted, and talks of the changes he saw as he grew up: villages merging, the effect of the grid roads on transport, the loss of local shops and the decline of community spirit. He remembers some resentment of incomers, and recalls that newcomers with new ideas could cause tensions in some existing organisations. He discusses estates such as Galley Hill and Fullers Slade; the latter became a ‘dangerous place’, whereas other new estates succeeded. He tells several anecdotes about the concrete cows.
His community of friends in MK is through drama, music and church. He is enthusiastic about these communities, and also about the shops and theatre district. He loves MK and all the landscaping, and would not move away, but thinks the town should not ‘eat up any more countryside’. He regrets the loss of the old communities.
