Interview with Pat Old (b.1947).
Pat Old was born in New Bradwell. She talks about her schooling, and shopping as a child, talking of the urban hierarchy – Bradwell, Wolverton, Stony Stratford. and going on the train to Woolworth’s in Newport Pagnell. She recalls some pop concerts she went to at the Palace Ballroom, Wolverton: Billy Fury, The Animals, The Hollies; she saw the Beatles at the ABC cinema in Northampton.
She remembers articles in the local press about the plans for Milton Keynes and artist’s impressions of Monorails, which were not taken seriously. She comments: ‘Most people were ‘anti’ at that point, I would say.’ She became more positive about MK as she met newcomers through a mothers’ club, when her children were young. Her employment as a conveyancer also involved her with the new town. She discusses changes to Wolverton including the effect of the Agora. She is a member of the Stantonbury Drama Group, which she joined after seeing ‘All Change’, and has enjoyed the benefits of all the new amenities. But now she feels ‘you could be anywhere, you don’t know any faces … The good things are still there, but a lot has gone to the bad.’
