Letter from Hubert Taylor to his parents, Beryl and Frank dated 5th July 1945.
Photocopy of a letter from Hubert Taylor to his parents, Beryl and Frank dated 5th July 1945. Hubert writes to his parents to tell them how his leave is progressing. The weather is cooler after a thunderstorm and Hubert is spending his leave quietly enjoying the break from everyday routine. He has visited a local restaurant and been to the cinema twice. The club is good and he has been getting plenty of eggs. He thinks the WVS women who run the canteen are very nice and Hubert thinks it is good to be able to speak to English women, many of whom have been in India for some years. He writes that he met some W.A.A.F.s in Delhi and all complained about the heat. In Hubert’s view they should ever have been allowed to come although they did volunteer. Hubert writes about the Simla Conference and hopes that India gets independence which would mean that “all the boys” could come home. Hubert has met members of the 14th Army who have explained how the Irrawaddy river was crossed without any special equipment. Hubert considers this a marvellous achievement. He has not yet decided when he will leave Lahore but does not think it will be later than the weekend. He has not met anyone from the home town while in Lahore. He reports that he has had some games of snooker and beat an Indian master after a very good game. He asks about people from home and hopes his father is “getting plenty of bowls” asking when the county competitions are due. He wishes his family well.
