Letter from Hubert Taylor to his parents, Beryl and Frank dated 23rd May 1945
Photocopy of a letter from Hubert Taylor to his parents, Beryl and Frank dated 23 May 1945. Hubert thanks his mother for her letter of 16th May and assures her that his arm is quite allright after the vaccination, telling her that everyone had to be done and that they are vaccinated more often in India. He says he is pleased that prisoners of war are coming home , particularly with regard to a Mrs Wheeler who has been on her own for five years and carried on without complaint while her son was a prisoner of war. He expresses surprise that Frank Chapman has been posted to India as he was under the impression that only young men would be sent out to India. He thinks this shows how “they twist things round to suit themselves” but hopes that Frank will look him up when he gets near. Hubert reports that he has had a letter from a Major Alderson who advises him not to “go up that way” just now as it is too hot and the rains will soon be starting. The Major thinks it would be better to go in October when it will be cooler and the rains have ceased but Hubert hopes he will be thinking of coming home by then. He will wait until the leave hostels in the hills are reopened in June. Hubert expresses surprise that people have fallen out at the Bowls Club and thinks they are worse than kids. Instead of resigning when anyone does anything they don’t like, the people should thrash the matter through “as men would”. Hubert notes there is a general election scheduled for July and asks who his parents will be voting for although he does think the election should have been delayed until the Japanese were beaten. He wishes his family well.
