Letter from Hubert Taylor to his parents, and Beryl and Frank, 5 December 1944
Photocopy of a letter from Hubert Taylor to his parents and Beryl and Frank dated 5 December 1944. Hubert begins by thanking his family for the parcel which had arrived safe and sound. All the contents were intact apart from slight buckling to a tin which Hubert will mend as the tin will be useful for storing things in. He also thanks his family for the messages in the parcel which brought a lump to his throat but shares his family’s hope that they will all be together the same time next year. Hubert is impressed that the parcel reached him in 48 days (it was posted on 15 October) as some of his colleagues are still waiting for theirs. He expresses concern that he has not had news of his wife since letters of November and expresses the hope that this is because of backlogs in the system and not because his daughter Marguerite has contracted measles in a recent outbreak. He thanks the family for sending newspapers, particularly as he enjoys the articles of Canon Elliot who “has the right ideas for a better world”. He says he has had a letter from Gran and Alf and notes that Gran writes a good letter for her age. Hubert reports on some boxing matches. He says that he promised Beryl a birthday present but so far has not found anything suitable so may send some money so they can all get themselves something. Hubert says he will not be sending cables for Christmas as he has sent letters. He says he is well and comments on his sun burn.
