Letter from Hubert Taylor to his parents, 24 February 1945
Photocopy of a letter from Hubert Taylor to his parents dated 24 February 1945. Hubert begins by thanking his parents for a parcel which clearly contained many items – enough to set up a chemist’s shop. It included a first aid kit and ointments, but he tells them he now has enough shaving cream and toothpaste to last his stay in India. Alf had sent him 200 cigarettes which had “toured India” before reaching Hubert. He hopes his parents are well and recommends a film called “A Man Called Joe” which they should see if it is ever shown at their local cinema. Hubert reports that nothing much has changed in India and that the weather is still very hot. Hubert feels cheered about the way the war is going and notes that Turkey has just declared war on Germany and Japan, noting that they “know which way their bread is buttered” and that “we do all the fighting and they come in for the spoils”. Hubert ends by saying how much he appreciates his parents’ kindnesses, wishes them well and suggests a holiday would do them both good.
