Each of the interviewees relates how they came to work at David Lock Associates and the experience of their interview and first impressions. The point is made that David Lock Associates offers the chance and encouragement to grow as individuals, for example EC came as an Office Junior, but expressed an interest in Graphic Design and is now a Graphic Design Assistant. The group recall the trips to Italy and France and the annual summer days out and how important they are in how people interact with each other. There is discussion about how people stay rather than move to other jobs but the reason given is that David Lock Associates offers new personal opportunities ‘and then you’ve got people like David and Jeanette and they’re such lovely people that you can’t imagine them not exactly being in your life…’. Later there is talk about being encouraged to be creative, learning something new every day and senior colleagues being prepared to share their knowledge – ‘I think people do wear their passion on their sleeve a bit here and that sort of rubs off a bit and conspires you to want to get involved.’
CP discusses how he was recruited as a CAD technician but did not know what Auto CAD was and how he has learned on the job as well as receiving training in Graphic Design. Each interviewee is asked what job has given them the most satisfaction and projects mentioned are, contributing to the Urban Context Study and the research and writing of the social history of Rugby, a strategic master plan for Felixstowe, coordinating all the graphic design for the Eastgate in Durham project, putting all the paperwork together for a first tender, Brooklands in Milton Keynes and CAD work on the East Swindon project which helped the public understand the plans better.
Asked for words that describe David Lock Associates that should be in the final book they mention ‘friendship – you come to work with your friends’, ‘pride’, ‘passion. Talking about the USP of David Lock Associates, one interviewee says, ‘I think David Lock tries to take the best bits out of the theory of planning and what it stands for and what it represents and tries to instil the best bits of that into everybody who works here.’
