Initial biographical details and dates of when they joined the firm. Several recollections about the first few weeks and months, the friendliness, the support, the lack of a macho culture (being interviewed by senior female directors) but also the terror and time it took to get ‘adopted’ and wondering when you’d be given work to do. For EJ, David Lock Associates is a huge contrast with her previous employment experience and she puts this down to David Lock and the way he treats people as people, not employees – as an extension to his family – and is generous and rewards hard work. That attitude inspires loyalty. They talk about social events at Christmas and the trip to France and its importance in team building – getting to know people in a way that is impossible day to day in a busy office. LK says that the lack of competition with colleagues (‘clawing over each other to get to the top’) and its openness makes David Lock Associates unique in her experience so far.
JC talks about the biggest change to coming back to work after her career break was the presence of computers and the firm supporting CPD.
They also talk about what they mean by ‘place making’. There is no blueprint because each place where they go to work is unique. There is also a discussion about the creation of community and what ‘community’ means.
