Edna Eguchi Read's artwork 'After'
This film shows Edna Eguchi Read’s artwork ‘After’, her first pieces of work that were shown to the public and formed part of the Open University’s Art Walk exhibition. The film captures each individual piece she made. All the pieces of sculpture appear grey, old, and decayed.
The exact location of where was being filmed was not available.
John Hempson, Edna Read and the cameraman were there when this was filmed, though only Edna was shown on camera.
The only sound is background noise and John and Edna talking.
The opening shot is of the piece of work ‘An apple for the teacher’ showing a stool and two apples on top of it.
00:00:47 the camera zooms out to show different pieces of Edna’s art. It shows sculptures of a violin placed on a chair, hats hanging from a stand, and a tennis racket, ball and towel on a chair.
00:01:24 the camera takes close shots of the tennis racket, ball and towel on the chair. This piece is called ‘Who’s for Tennis’
00:02:29 the camera takes close shots of ‘The Virtuoso’ consisting of a violin on a chair with the case leaning against it.
00:04:17 the camera focuses next on ‘Christopher Robin is saying his prayers’ which consists of a teddy bear sitting on a chair. Before cutting back to ‘The Virtuoso’.
00:05:08 the camera cuts to a tree and then pans down to show a wide shot of the different pieces of art by Edna. The camera then slowly moves along to the right to give a closer look, focusing on the different elements of the artwork.
00:07:53 the camera shows a close up of the hats that are hanging from the stand.
00:10:42 the camera films ‘An apple for the teacher’.
00:11:43 ‘Drinks at 7’ is filmed, it is a bottle of wine with two glasses next to it on top of a tall stall with empty bottles on the floor. The camera takes various close and wide shots.
00:12:42 ‘The Party’s Over’ is filmed next, it is an old fashioned garment laying over a chair with a pair of shoes in front and next to a small table with a wine glass tipped over and a necklace.
00:12:48 Edna is shown for the first time, she is altering the hat stand.
00:14:31 there is a close up of another one of Edna’s pieces, ‘Tea for Two’. This one shows two teacups and plates with pieces of cake on a table.
00:15:44 the camera shows Edna sitting on the floor against a brick wall looking at her artwork. It shows a label ‘Happy ever after’. We then see her positioned in front of ‘The Virtuoso’ and ‘Who’s for Tennis’.
00:18:15 there is a close up of a small sculpture of a woman and child which forms part of ‘Happy Ever After’.
00:18:31 the camera shows a sculptured skateboard and doll lying on and against the table which have a dummy and vase on top of it. These form the sculpture ‘Mother’s Day’. The camera moves to show a sculpture of a gardeners fork in the ground ‘Gardeners World’ and then moves back to ‘Mother’s day’
00:19:37 from this point the camera then focuses on the label for each piece before showing the work. It starts with ‘Happy ever After’ showing the full sculpture of a tall stall with a picture frame on top. On the ledge on the stool is the small sculpture of the woman and child.
