Northampton Mercury - Letter to the editor regarding the ineffectiveness of the Poor Laws from 'A. FARMER' (1830).
Photocopy of an article published in the Northampton Mercury on 20th of February 1830 regarding a letter sent to the editor, dated February 4th 1830 and signed ambiguously from ‘A. Farmer’. The writer complains that the laws have become ineffective through the changes in population and the cessation of certain trades due to the introduction of machinery and free trading. The result is that the poor laws ‘have become unequal, oppressive, ruinous to that class of persons on whom they are laid’.
