Transcript published in the Hertford Mercury of an account of a meeting of shareholders of the Great Northern Line held on the 10th of August 1850. The meeting was in celebration of the completion of the line and was presided over by Mr. Denison the chairman who toasts the health of the shareholder’s, the contractors, the directors and the construction workers the ‘navvies’. ‘what he said of the navvies he was sure was was true of the whole labouring population of this mighty nation… never proposed a toast for Her Majesty, her Royal Consort, or the great Authorities of the State with more cordiality than he now did that of the working classes’. Finally he toasts the press, in the hope that they will express an independent opinion. The account also includes a list of all the attendees.
