'All Change' Act 1 Scene 5 - The Railway Bill Before the Lords.
Scene 5 : The Railway Bill Before the Lords.
This scene is built on extracts from verbatim transcripts of the House of Lords Committee Hearings of evidence in support of the proposed railway. The Lords considered masses of evidence of which this is a fair sample, and in spite of the overwhelming weight in favour of the Railway Bill, the assent of the Lords was withheld. Eventually the Lords’ opposition was bought off by enormous compensatory payments from the London and Birmingham Company. Wharncliffe’s reaction to the Lords’ decision we found in a report of a meeting at the Thatched House Tavern of peers and MPs favourable to the Bill.
